When do I make a post about Vegas that doesn’t involve gambling? I aside from the fact that I only played for about two hours, I guess this is the one.
Friday: Esther and I got a bit of a late start. She had to work half day so we couldn’t get on the road as early as I had wanted to. For some reason there were a ton of accidents that day, so getting past Ontario/Fontana and past the 215 took us over 2 hours. However, nothing really exciting happened. It just took us about 5.5 hours to get to Vegas.
Once there, we checked into our hotel, Four Queens. It was my first stay downtown since my old family trips there 10+ years ago. Interestingly, the Four Queens is apparently now owned by the MGM company (who also happen to own most of the southern strip hotels). Newly renovated within the past few years, and the best deal we could find for this weekend. My only complaint was that our cheap room was right on the Fremont Street Experience. Thus, the music was pretty loud late into the night.
It was about 7:30 by the time we got into our room, so we changed for dinner and lounged around watching tv. At 8:30 we left for our 9 o’clock dinner reservation at Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House. WOW. If you love steak this is the place for you. A bit pricey, everything on the menu is a la carte, besides a few full dinner choices. Esther went with the prime ribeye, while I chose the filet mignon. WOW. Esther’s steak was perfectly marbled. This is what you think of when you have Kobe steak. Mine was very lean and a very thick cut. Everything was perfectly cooked. My steak was medium throughout, not well done on the outside and rare on the inside. The sides we chose were a little bit over the edge, but did fine in terms of taste. I would definitely recommend this place, and definitely plan on going back in the future.
Saturday: Being that we were out there primarly for a car meet, we got up relatively early and took my car to our friend’s house for a wash. Boy was it hot.
A bunch of the SoCal guys had done an early Saturday morning caravan and were just getting into town, so we met up with them for lunch at Original Thai BBQ near the Stratosphere. I must say it was a pretty good choice. The food was good and the portions just enough for lunch.
Sunday: Had breakfast at Aloha Specialties in the California. Can’t have a Vegas trip without stopping by the Cal for some Aloha Specialties or the downstairs cafe, can I?
Afterward we bought a bunch of Hawaiian Sun drinks and packed up the car. Stayed at the meet until about 3 and hit the road home. As usual traffic was horrible on Sunday afternoon, especially near the California entry checkpoint.
Flew by a CHP on the Cajon Pass doing about 80, but some cars were leaving me behind so I guess either he was waiting for speeding trucks or maybe someone going closer to 90? Who knows.
Ended the weekend with dinner at SinBala, a chinese/taiwanese sausage place in Arcadia.
Pictures sometime.
